The Lie of the Land: Exploring Modern British Landscapes from the Swindon Collection

Dist inguished paintings of the landscape from the 20th century are currently on show at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Dating from 1920 to the present day, the artworks are from the museum’s collect ion and include pieces by Mary Fedden, Vanessa Bell, Roger Fry and Christ opher Nevinson. Drawings, prints and photography are also within the exhibition and all depict the countryside or nature in an emotive way. swindonmuseumandartgallery.org.uk

With the disp lay changing every four months, this free exhibition celebrates how artist s have captured the broad range of Britain’s fl ora, fauna and geology in the last 300 years. The 200 illust rations are drawn from the Natural Hist ory Museum’s extensive Library Collect ion, with some having never been on public disp lay before. From the dramatic scenery of Buachaille Etive Mтr to the wondrous wildlife of the Cairngorms, Scotland has long been an insp iration to outdoor photographers who hope to encapsulate the beauty and diversity of the natural world through st unning imagery. See some of the most successful pict ures of Scotland’s wilderness at Logan Botanic Garden this autumn, where 30 pict ures from the 2016 Scott ish Nature Photography Awards will be on show. Now in its seventh year, the competition has ten categories – including land, sea and coast , natural abst ract and wildlife.
